Notes · July 22, 2026

Everyone is wiring in AI. Almost nobody is reading the terms.

A note from Dave Selinger, Rocalyn's founder. First published as a LinkedIn post on July 21, 2026; this is its permanent home.

Here's the pattern, and it's industry-agnostic: the tools you connect are quietly deciding what happens to your customers' data. Consumer AI tiers now default to training on your conversations. CRMs "share" contact data upstream with parent platforms and ad networks. Policies hold data indefinitely, with no clock and no stated purpose. It's a land grab, and the deed being transferred covers your customer relationships and your own business data, often unknowingly.

Real estate, where I'm building, is the sharpest version of it.

A realtor's client data is life-intimate: pre-approval amounts, divorce timelines, kids' schools. The coaching world is (rightly) telling agents to build AI into everything. The advice is good. But the playbook covers the back office, your time, your review, your retry button. It skips one slide:

Whose policy is your clients' data under?

The receipts, plainly:

  • Consumer tiers of the big AI assistants default to training on your conversations now. Business tiers don't, contractually. About $20 versus about $50 a month.
  • Even a vendor that never trains may still be holding your customers' data, or sharing it with "marketing providers," ad networks, parent platforms. Real estate is already reacting: Bright MLS banned AI training on listing data outright.
  • The vendors who make these questions hardest to answer are already answering them.

The first fix costs thirty bucks: get the business tier of whatever AI you use. Then automate everything you planned. This afternoon. You don't need me for any of that.

The part that shouldn't be DIY is wherever your customers speak their lives out loud in real time. In real estate that's the phone line: no retry button, and a mistake isn't a do-over, it's a compliance event. That's what I built Rocalyn Edge on, with one test: for every byte we keep, who benefits from the keeping, and when does the keeping end?

Your customers trusted YOU. Every vendor you bring in inherits that trust. Most are not treating it like an inheritance.

Before you sign, or stay, with ANY system that touches customer data (ours included), ask:

  1. Whose policy is my customer data under, and does it train or share?
  2. How long do you keep it, and who benefits from the keeping?
  3. Who owns the record when I leave?

Rocalyn published our vetting checklist for real estate: eight questions you can send any vendor in one email, with our own answers on the record. It travels well beyond real estate.

Your line. Your book. Yours to keep. Always.

Join the agents who own their line and their book.
